Teaching Better Brushing Habits

Now that my kids are no longer toddlers Teaching Better Brushing Habits
Now that my kids are no longer toddlers, tooth brushing has become a task that we have turned over to them. This is a great relief and one less thing for my husband and I to do, but we noticed a disturbing trend. Our kids were not brushing correctly. They were brushing quickly and not cleaning all their teeth. Clearly, we needed a better system to make sure our "tooth brushing" kids were doing a better job keeping cavities at bay. We came up with some general guidelines that have helped our kids to be better brushers. Thanks to Orajel™ Kids for sponsoring this post about Teaching Better Brushing Habits.

My daughter was so excited to get her Bubble Guppies Toothbrush and Bubble Guppies Orajel Kids toothpaste. My kids got a big kick out of the fact that the toothpaste flavor was called "Fintastic."

Tips for creating better brushers:

1. Let the child pick the supplies

Orajel Kids offers fun varieties of toothpaste and brushes with beloved characters that kids are sure to find something they like. When kids are excited about their toothbrush they will spend more time brushing.

2. Using a Kitchen Timer

Dentists recommend kids brush for 2 minutes. This can be a long time when you are a kid. Since young kids have difficulty estimating time, a simple kitchen timer on the bathroom counter can alert them when they are done. You can also play a favorite song that is roughly 2 minutes long to help make passing the time even more fun.

3. Brushing the important places

According to dentists, the majority of cavities develop in the molars and more time should be spent brushing these harder to reach areas. Teach your child to brush every tooth. My kids have a set pattern when they brush their teeth. They first start with all the top teeth and then work on the bottom ones. Doing it this way eliminates the haphazard brushing that can be common with kids.
