Understanding Common Core

If you have a child in school or nearing school age, I am sure you have heard about Common Core State Standards and the changes associated with it. You may have heard good things or bad things. In speaking with educators and parents, I have heard lots of opinions but also much confusion. There has never been a more confusing time to be a parent of a school aged child. Luckily, parents don't have to navigate this alone. Classroom teachers are a great source of information and support as is the Be a Learning Hero website.
The Be a Learning Hero website aims to provide parents with answers and resources that can help them better understand the Common Corn state standards and support their child's learning at home. Some of the organizations behind Be a Learning Hero include the National PTA, Great Schools and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
At BeaLearningHero.com, parents can learn about the Common Core state standards and what they mean for their children's educational future. There are also resources that help parents support their child's learning.
My favorite part of the Be a Learning Hero site is the Homework Help Desk. As a parent, I know that I always feel more empowered when I can help my kids with their homework. But change of any kind can be difficult and homework looks a lot different than it did when I was a kid. I was so glad to discover that BeaLearningHero.com offers homework help for parents. This is a lifesaver! You can read and watch videos on how to help kids with all kinds of grade specific lessons and homework. This site made me feel so empowered and took a lot of the guesswork and confusion out of what and how my kids are learning.
Of course your child's teacher should always be your first source of information about what is going on in the classroom. Speak with them if you have any questions Common Core, but certainly use other resources such as Be a Learning Hero to help you weed through all the information out there.

You will also find Essential School Tools where you can find teacher approved apps and learning websites for kids. There are some for each grade level and I even discovered some games that my kids enjoy playing at school. The Skills in Action section shows you videos of what success looks like at the end of each school year. There are also tips for supporting your child at home which includes health and wellness tips as well as parent teacher conference guides.
