Pressing Flowers With Kids
One of our favorite things about Spring is the blooming flowers that pop up all over our backyard. My daughters love to pick them, but they feel sad when the flowers quickly die. We decided to try and press flowers to preserve and enjoy them longer. This is a great activity to do together as a family. This post has been sponsored by Tree Top. Their Raising Good Apples campaign which is what inspired us to get outdoors for this Pressing Flowers activity.
You can taste the fresh apples in each pouch of Tree Top Apple Sauce which makes sense when you consider that Tree Top is located in the heart of Washington's apple country. They are a grower owned co-op and really get involved in the communities they work and live in. People have trusted Tree top for more than 50 years because they have been providing customers with top quality products and top of the line ingredients. We are big fans of their juices, smoothies and sauces.
Tree Top doesn't just grow top quality fruits for their products, they are committed to giving back as well. They are donating to KidsGardening.org to help inspire and teach the next generation. Tree Top has committed to donating a dollar to KidsGardening.org for every purchase of Tree Top Apple Sauce Pouches. Those donations will help KidsGardening.org to fund community gardens and raise good apples, one child, one school, one community at a time. This is a cause that is close to my heart as my daughters have a garden at their school that each grade gets to help tend. My girls love the time spent in this garden and their teachers love having it as a resource to use for learning.
On a recent beautiful Spring day we went outdoors to enjoy our garden with a snack of Tree Top Applesauce Pouches. My girls enjoyed the cinnamon, apple and strawberry varieties.
My kids love Tree Top Apple Pouches because they are delcious and refreshing. They make a great outdoor or on-the-go snack. I often place the pouches in their lunch box at school since I like the fact that they are mess free, taste great and made with 100% pure fruit. Plus, I don't need to pack a spoon since these pouches are squeezable.
Is there anything more fitting than enjoying Tree Top Apple Sauce under an apple tree?
When the snack was over we got started on pressing flowers. To collect the flowers, we used a scissor and a paper cup. Please keep an eye on your child when they are working with scissors. I explained that we would be cutting the flower close to where the stem meets the flower.
My kids loved searching through the yard for the prettiest blooms they could find.
Spending time outdoors really helped to recharge my kids. They had been cranky earlier and once we got outdoors and working in the garden, the bad moods just dissipated.
Each of my daughters collected 3-4 flowers to be pressed.
For the actual pressing, you will use the biggest book you have (in our case a dictionary) and some wax paper. Open up your book and lay a length of wax paper on it, enough to cover both pages. Push the flowers onto one side of the wax paper.
We treid to open the petals as much as we could for this step.
Close the book, careful that the wax paper inside stays put. I recommend waiting about two weeks before checking on the flowers to see if they have dried out suffiently. Once they are dry, you can mount them, display them or use them to make art. If you love the beauty of a garden in Spring, then this activity can help you and child to preserve those memories.
